Photographic Essay about Afro-Peruvians: who are they and why should we care?" (by Eve A. Ma)
Filmmaker (and photographer) Eve A. Ma will show some of her photographs of Afro-Peruvians taken during her trips to Peru to film documentaries about that community. In addition to bringing to light a community that many people do not know exists, she will explain why we should be interested in it and what it has to teach us.
The slides in this exhibit have previously been shown in the San Pablo Art Gallery.
Ma is a woman on her fourth career. As a filmmaker, she is happy to let her earlier careers inform her work. Former history professor, lawyer and cultural non-profit administrator, she strongly believes in the importance of intercultural communication. Wherever she goes, she takes photographs, and the ones she will present at this event represent the best and most interesting ones that illustrate her knowledge of and experiences with the Afro-Peruvian community.

Gabriela Nunez
Born and raised in Lima, Peru. Gabriela Nunez moved to the East Bay in her late teens. Since she was young she has had a love for art. As she developed her artistic ability, she primarily focused on the women and children of the Andes. Gabriela’s inspiration comes from the innocence of the Indian people of the Andes, the ready expression of emotions on their faces, the size and strength of their hands and feet, the hard diligent work they do for very little, especially the women who tend fields, raise the children and hand make their own and their family’s clothing. She is impressed by the close-knit, supporting culture the exists amongst the women. Gabriela would like people to see the beauty and pride she has for the women of the Peruvian Andes and to feel the love she has for her heritage and culture.
Gabriela obtained most of her art training at Contra Costa College and Laney College. Gabriela has been greatly influenced by Diego Rivera and Vincent Van Goth, who both used brilliant colors and gave movement in her brush strokes. She likes Diego Rivera because he also painted indigenous of his country, Mexico. Gabriela uses different mediums to express herself. She paints with oils, acrylics and water colors. Her favorite medium is colored pencils. Today, she is learning the art of print making and has made several etchings and block prints. She has shown her work around the Bay Area, San Francisco and San Juan Bautista, California.

Bruce Ruseicki
Bruce Rusiecki is an emerging artist who started painting at the age of 50, after raising two kids, putting them through college and working many years in industry. Realizing the void in his life left by his two kids heading off to college, art began pouring out. Bruce is a self-trained artist, mainly working in an acrylics and digital media. His bold use of colors, coupled with a range of design patterns in his work, has built a following of collectors and art lovers from all over California and the western U.S. He is inspired to continue pushing the boundaries of this art form, finding new and exciting color combinations and devising new ways of mixing and manipulating them on canvas.
"I work in this medium because I love the challenge of it. I never know exactly what the final result will be. Finding design and color combinations that work well together, and then having them reveal surprising results is challenging, inspiring and just downright fun. I am constantly seeing new and inspiring designs in nature, in books, magazines, television, movies and my own imagination. I am passionate about what I do and committed to constantly exploring my passion.” - Bruce Rusiecki

Hershell West
Muralist, Painter, Arts educator, Arts advocate
Born and raised in the small town of Enterprize, Alabama at a time when the South was still seggregated, a career in the arts was not what West, as an African-American, was expected to pursue. However, after graduating from high school and serving in the army, the GI Bill allowed him to enroll in the University of South Florida where he obtained first his bachelors and then a masters in fine arts.
Even before graduating, West had begun working in public art. He completed several murals in the Tampa area, organized programs for bringing art to the community, and worked in the Dean's office to use art as a means of bridging the gap between the town and the university.
Not long after getting his masters, West moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in large part to join the mural scene of the area and be close to a muralist he admired, John Wehrle. Soon, he found himself working as an assistant for Wehrle even as he executed private commissions.
As he settled into the Bay Area, West became very active in the art scene of the East Bay. He became a member and later president of the board of ProArts in Oakland and the Richmond Art Center in Richmond. He served on both the Oakland Arts Commission and the Richmond Arts and Cultural Commission, for both of which he also
served a term as president. He helped organize an annual exhibition, TAOLB (The Art of Living Black), one of the
largest of its kind in the nation.
And he taught: in the Richmond Art Center, in the Juvenile Justice hall of Alameda County, in programs for at-risk youth in West Contra Costa County, in Boys & Girls Clubs throughout much of the East Bay. He has a great rapport with kids, and in the process of teaching them art, also passed on important life lessons such as the need for self-control, the possibilities of attaining ones dreams by staying on focus, and the benefits of collaboration.
In sum, a well-rounded artist who knows how to use his skills to contribute to society.

As she developed her artistic ability, she primarily focused on the women and children of the Andes. Gabriela's inspiration comes from the innocence of the Indian people of the Andes, the ready expression of emotions on their faces, the size and strength of their hands and feet, the hard diligent work they do for very little, especially the women who tend fields, raise the children and hand make their own and their family's clothing. "Art is the way we see our lives. It is the imagery we have upon waking at sunrise. It is the thoughts we think, the words we speak, and the air we breathe. Mimi Wirth
Mimi Wirth will be doing an oil painting demo.
Mimi was born in Albany, California and began painting in oils at the age of nine. She earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She taught art on all educational levels from special invitational classes for children, the high school level and numerous workshops for adults in watercolor, stained glass and oil painting. She was invited to teach etching in Japan as a goodwill ambassador. Mimi’s talent was recognized by many art teaching awards including Southern California Teacher of the Year and Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year. Her varied career has also encompassed commercial illustration and package design including work for Pink Panther, Popeye and Elvis Presley Products.
Mimi has studied with the talents of Anne Manry Kenyon, Gregg Kreutz, Milt Kobaysahi, Frederick Grue, Jan Saether, David Leffel, and Howard Terpning. Her special training in old master’s painting techniques, use of the Maroger medium and impressionistic approach to her oil paintings is expressed in rich colors, fine realism and a varied distinct style. This oil painting interpretation and concentrated skill is truly unique. Each painting is beautifully expressed by her sensitivity to the subject matter. She is particularly interested in painting the American Indian with dignity and respect. Her talents have been widely acclaimed and her work can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world.

Nancy Robinson
Nancy will be showing her artwork and talking about her painting process.
Nancy has painted since she was young, taking time out to raise a family, work as a nurse and in related positions as an RN. Along the way, she took classes and workshops from Jade Fon and Mike Barnes at DVC through those with Arne Westerman, Skip Lawrence, Sherry-Kwint-Cattache, Tesia Blackburn, Alex Powers, Katherine Liu, to name a few. She has always favored the human form in all of it's eccentricities and finds she connects with the model. She feels there is nothing more beautiful than the human form. Currently she is connecting the figure with the abstract. Nancy says she works pretty intuitively having collected a lot of skills through years of just painting. She lets the brush direct her, leaving the rational mind out of it. Painting is fun for her and she hopes you enjoy her work as much as she enjoyed creating it.

Patrice Stone
Patrice will lead us in creating a Mandala. A Maṇḍala (मण्डल) is a Sanskrit word meaning "circle." Mandalas have spiritual meaning in many cultures. We will be creating a mandala on black paper with colored pencils. If you have colored pencils please bring them. She will have some to share and she will supply the black paper. Patrice will show us examples. Then we will use a white pencil to draw our designs. Applying color on top lightly to achieve the greatest range of light values. Apply more pressure and pigment to extend the scale into the black paper.
