In 1997, I attended beginning stained glass art class at Stained Glass Gardens in Berkeley. My first project was a basic window that was the class assignment. I decided to be more creative with the glass so I created my first flower/hummingbird sculpture. My wife and sister-in-laws were impressed with it so I began adding to my designs. I gave my creations for gifts to family and friends, inspired by special occasions to create unique designs.
My background in fine art began in high school - first drafting, then painting, airbrushing, wood carving – which led to the desire to try stained glass. All of my pieces start with a hand drawn design. I don't use patterns and each piece is unique. I do my best work when I'm in “the zone”.
I have a favorite compilation music CD that I listen to when I work in my home studio. I enjoy experimenting with colors and various types of glass to find the combination that works. While living in Mendocino I began to gather driftwood for the basis of the whales I was carving out of redwood. That inspired the driftwood bases for the hummingbird and flower pieces. I also use river rock or burl wood for bases. The flower stems are copper tubing.
